Annual Planting a Seed to Grow the Gardens
Tonight, the Friends of the Kansas State University Gardens plan to provide you with a remarkable night of
entertainment. We want you to experience more great food and fun than you can imagine. And we also happen
to have an assortment of beverages that you won’t want to miss!
Thank you for the support you’ve shown us by being here tonight. If by chance you learn something new
about the Gardens...something about its beginning in 1871 to teach Land Grant University students about
gardening, or the present conservatory having been built in 1908 and then moved to its present site in
1978...we’d love it if you’d continue your support by telling all your friends and family what you learn! Our
greatest asset is your understanding and advocacy.
The KSU Gardens have been designed as a life-long learning laboratory, to encourage environmental
involvement with the University community and the general public. An ever-changing display of plants provides
an opportunity for education, research and conservation. Students and faculty use the Gardens as an extension
to their classroom teachings. For example, students from the arts, architecture, education, entomology,
horticulture, hotel and hospitality visit annually.
Over 10,000 people visit the Gardens during the year! 80% of the funding of the Gardens is through your
generous donations. We are grateful for your support. Please ask any member of the Friends of the Gardens
tonight and we’ll tell you all about the truly wonderful plans we have for the Gardens. We are proud to be a part
of this Land Grant school and this great community.
Warmly,
The Friends of the Kansas State University Garden

Steve and Cathy Lacy
Steve and Cathy Lacy have a long history of supporting Kansas State University financially and with
volunteering their time and expertise. Their most recent gift supports three programs in the colleges of Human
Ecology and Business Administration.
A gift to the Department of Hospitality Management funded the new Cathy and Steve Lacy Quantity Foods
Lab and a quick service area named Lacys Fresh Fare & Catering. The gift to the Department of Food, Nutrition,
Dietetics and Health created the Cathy Wiltfong Family Fellowship for faculty in that department. The Lacys’ gift
to the College of Business Administration’s Career Coach program will help expand that program to encompass
more students.
Cathy Lacy graduated from K-State in 1979 with a degree in dietetics. Steve Lacy received his bachelors in
accounting in 1976 and his Master in Business Administration in 1977, both from K-State. They live in Des
Moines, Iowa.
The Lacys serve on the KSU Foundation Board of Trustees and Steve is currently the chair of the KSU
Foundation Board of Directors. Steve is on the College of Business Administration Dean’s Advisory Council
executive committee and serves as a mentor to business students. Both Cathy and Steve serve on the Innovation
and Inspiration Campaign committee and on the campaign steering committees for the Colleges of Business
Administration and Human Ecology. Both have been commencement speakers for their colleges.
Steve is the executive chairman of the board of Meredith Corporation, a company committed to service
journalism for more than 115 years. He serves on multiple boards for corporations, professional organizations
and community service organizations.
Cathy had a career in nutrition education and marketing, working for hospitals and Tone’s Spices. She also
serves on several boards that champion education and support youth in Des Moines and central Iowa.
Steve and Cathy have been chosen as this year’s honorees because of their support of gardening through the
Meredith Corporation Better Homes and Gardens magazine and test garden.
WE SALUTE YOU CATHY AND STEVE!

INSTANT WINE CELLAR –

A great wine collection, unlike any other, has been created through the generosity of
the members of the Manhattan Wine Club, the Friends of the Gardens Board and their
friends. This is a perfect way to expand your exposure to really great wine! A complete
listing of all the wines is available.
The winner of this package will surely want to share the bounty, so the package includes
a selection of delightful delicacies from Murrays Cheese, now located in our Dillon’s store.
Murrays was founded in 1940 by Murray Greenberg, a Jewish veteran of the Spanish Civil
War, who built a great reputation for Murray’s cheese that still exists today. Greenberg
eventually sold the store to his clerk, Louis Tudda, an Italian immigrant from Calabria. One
day, Rob Kaufelt was standing in line when he heard Louis Tudda say that he was closing
the shop. Rob, a graduate of Cornell, made him an offer, becoming just the 3rd owner of
New York’s most beloved cheese shop. In 2008, Murrays entered into an agreement with
The Kroger Company, to expand Krogers specialty cheese program and now Murrays
cheeses can be found in 350+ Kroger locations in 30 states. The flagship store remains a
proud Greenwich Village tradition on Bleecker Street and Rob remains with the company
as a strategic advisor. Rob is credited with turning Murray's into the "Apple store of
fromage.

THE KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY
GARDENS FUND
The KSU Gardens are designed as a lifelong learning laboratory to encourage
environmental involvement with the university community as well as the public. An
everchanging display of plants provides an opportunity for education, research and
conservations. 80% funded by charitable donations, The Kansas State University Gardens
serve as an invaluable educational tool and learning laboratory for K-State students and
visitors of all ages and is free and open to the public.
Charitable contributions assist in growing the KSU Gardens and increasing its visibility
as a gateway to campus. Tonight, during our Evening Extraordinaire you will have the
opportunity during the live auction to raise your hand and join others in support of garden
development, funding student interns and ongoing maintenance of this historic university
project.

The Gardens at Kansas State University have been have been part of the university since 1875. In 1909, the beautiful
Victorian style conservatory became a key component of The Gardens. The original formal gardens, including a reflection
pool, were eliminated in 1978 to make way for Bluemont Hall. The Gardens and conservatory were relocated to their current
site on Denison Avenue. Unfortunately, age has taken its toll on the conservatory building and due to public safety concerns,
it was closed in 2008.
Plans are being made for a new conservatory; blending new materials with historical architectural features and adding an
education/multi-use space. Also staying true to bringing the old into the new; a reflection pool, anchored by black arbors,
is planned to showcase the north garden.
