GSC Kicks Off Fall 2021 Semester
Glenville State College students marked the first day of fall
2021 semester classes on Monday, August 16.
During the previous week, new students took part in New
Pioneer Orientation which was designed to help them create
meaningful connections, become familiar with policies and
procedures at Glenville State, connect with the caring and
dedicated professionals across campus, and become
informed of the services GSC provides. They also had the
opportunity to finalize course schedules, meet new friends,
and take part in several activities.
Returning students used Saturday and Sunday to move into
their residence hall rooms in preparation for the first day of
classes.
"What an exciting time this is in the lives of these young
people here on our campus," said Glenville State College
President, Dr. Mark A. Manchin. "As this new academic year
begins, we are very excited to welcome everyone to Glenville
State College as these students work to complete their
his Bachelor of Science in
Business Administration
degree. After graduating
from GSC, he went on to
attend banking school.
An active member of his
community, Brett worked as
a volunteer after the 2016
flood that impacted West
Virginia and assisted with
creating masks during with
COVID-19 pandemic for
health care workers, nursing
homes, and Clay County

When asked what GSC
means to him, he stated,
"Not only did I gain a
valuable education at
Glenville State that prepared
me for my career, but I made
lifelong friends during my
four years. I am also very
proud that two of my children
chose to attend Glenville. My
daughter Katie is a teacher
at Clay County Middle
School and my son Seth
works for a design firm,
Inside Out Creative, in
Charleston, West Virginia."
We are pleased to feature
Brett in this week’s Alumni

semester and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for
these bright, talented students."
Pioneer Campus Store Now Open
This week, GSC officially opened its new Pioneer Campus
Store. The store is being operated in partnership with Barnes
& Noble College.
"This is a great addition to our campus," said Glenville State
President Dr. Mark A. Manchin. "I am appreciative to
everyone who worked so hard to make this Pioneer Campus
Store a reality. I love that our students now have quick
access to their course materials right here on campus and
that anyone can stop by and purchase a Glenville State
College t-shirt or hat to show their Pioneer pride. And I am
equally excited about the future plans we have for the space
just outside the store a Starbucks. Work for that has
already begun and we can’t wait to see that as well."
Glenville State is also the first higher education institution in
West Virginia to offer Barnes & Noble’s First Day Complete
program. The program provides students with all their
required textbooks, ready for pick up, on the first day of
class.
In addition to providing students with course materials, the
Pioneer Campus Store has Glenville State College branded
merchandise, general school supplies, and more available to
the campus community and local residents. The store is
located on the first floor of Louis Bennett Hall and is open
Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Senior education major Keelin Howes
GSC Senior Wins State Vaccination Scholarship
Senior Glenville State College education major Keelin Howes has won a college scholarship
as part of the "Do it for Babydog: Save a life, Change your life" Vaccination Sweepstakes.
The Buckhannon, West Virginia native said that she was in disbelief when she learned the
news.
"When I heard that I had won, I thought maybe someone else had my name," Howes said. "I
never win things like this so I felt like there was no way it was real. It has taken me a while to
comprehend how big this is for my future and I’m just so excited that I don’t have to worry
about how I’m going to keep going to school."
Howes explained that she has made adjustments to ensure that her degree is as affordable
as possible, but still underscored the impact of the scholarship. "Receiving this scholarship
has made my future more possible and I am so grateful that this opportunity has been given
to me," she added.
At Glenville State, Howes has been a member of the marching band, pep band, and is a
student assistant in the College’s Robert F. Kidd Library.
After graduating, she plans to teach social studies at the secondary education level and
proceed to graduate school to study history and world religion with intentions of working as a
professor for a college or university.
Howes was among the other week six vaccination sweepstakes winners.
