ADMISSION TO HONORS COURSES
Honors courses are designed for Honors College members; however, any TTU student with a GPA of 3.0 or
better is eligible to enroll in an Honors section as space permits.
For more information, or to request a seat in an Honors section, please contact the Honors College:
McClellan Hall, Room 101 | (806) 742-1828 | [email protected]
GRADUATION WITH HONORS DESIGNATIONS
Students must complete 24 hours in Honors coursework to graduate from Texas Tech University with the
transcript designation “with Honors from the Honors College.”
A student who wishes to graduate with the transcript designation “with Highest Honors from the Honors
College” must complete an Honors thesis and 30 hours of Honors coursework. Permission from the Honors
College is required before beginning the Honors thesis.
Students must maintain a TTU GPA of 3.5 to remain in the Honors College and graduate with either of the
above Honors designations.
Students intending to graduate with either designation must file an “Intent to Graduate” form with the Honors
College one year prior to the graduation date. Honors College designations are listed on the transcript and the
diploma. These are in addition to other distinctions graduates may earn, such as Latin Honors (e.g., Summa
cum laude, Magna cum laude, and Cum laude).

Appointment Scheduling Information:
Honors advising is focused on assisting with the identification of Honors course options and strategizing completion plans for your
Honors requirements. Please make arrangements to connect with your primary major advisor to discuss your overall degree plan.
Honors advising appointments will be conducted in-person at McClellan Hall. Not all Honors students are required to meet with an
Honors advisor, but all are welcome. If you are part of an Honors population that *is* required to meet with an Honors advisor, or
would simply like to connect with an Honors advisor, please use Raider Success Hub (RSH) at success.ttu.edu, to self-schedule an
appointment time.
Students admitted this Fall 2023 for the Honors VIP Admissions Cohort are required to schedule an advising appointment
with Kourtney Rodriguez. **Please make this appointment using the Honors College VIP advising option in RSH.**
Honors new current/transfer Honors students (admitted to the College for a Spring 2024 start) are required to schedule an
advising appointment with an advisor. An Honors advising hold will be placed until the student schedules an appointment via
RSH.
Honors students who are not making steady progress towards Honors course requirements will be contacted and required to
schedule an advising appointment. An Honors advising hold will be placed until the student schedules an appointment via
RSH.
Honors students who are on track to graduate within the next academic year are strongly encouraged, though not required,
to schedule an advising appointment. No Honors advising hold should be placed.
Honors students who are pursing 2+2 pre-health prerequisites and intend to complete Honors requirements on an
accelerated path before application to professional schools are strongly encouraged, though not required, to schedule an

advising appointment. No Honors advising hold should be placed. **Please make this appointment using the Honors College
2+2 advising option in RSH.**
All other Honors students are invited to make an appointment to discuss Honors-related advising questions. No Honors
advising hold should be placed.
Course Planning and Registration Information:
All university classes for Spring 2024 should be loaded on Raiderlink no later than October 9
th
. Honors and HE+ sections offered
during the spring semester will be listed in the Spring 2024 Course booklet which should be available to access here no later than
October 9
th
. *The Honors course booklet is subject to revision as Honors sections are added, cancelled, or otherwise modified.*
Unless specified as application-based, all Honors courses will be unrestricted to any student with an Honors cohort code.
Prerequisites required for specific classes are in place as indicated by the university and the individual teaching departments.
**The other exception is that sections H01, H02, and H03 of CHEM 1308 will be restricted initially so that students enrolled in the
equivalent sections of CHEM 1307 this Fall 2023 have the first opportunity to enroll. Those restrictions will be removed at a later time
to open any remaining seats to other Honors FIRST TIME IN COLLEGE students.**
Please note that Visual Schedule Builder will not always pull in Honors course sections accurately. We recommend you use the Plan
Ahead Tool in the Add/Drop classes portal or the Section Search Toolin conjunction with the Honors Course Bookletto build your
schedule manually.
You can find a sample degree plan/course sequence for your major in the TTU Undergraduate Catalog (catalog.ttu.edu) or find course
requirements in your DegreeWorks portal.
Always include your R# in any correspondence with a TTU advisor so that we can help you more efficiently.
Waitlists/Full Sections:
The Honors College no longer manages in-house waitlists for any Honors courses with the exception of the limited application-based
courses. All other Honors sections will be opened at the time of registration for all students with an Honors cohort code. If a section
fills, the student should add themselves to the Raiderlink waitlist for the desired section AND then immediately register for an
alternate, non-Honors section of the same course OR another alternate course that would be acceptable for degree sequencing. It is
imperative to register for an alternate course as soon as possible in the event that the student’s name never comes up on the
Raiderlink waitlist.
*If* a space opens in a full course and you are the next person on the Raiderlink waitlist, the Raiderlink system should send
information and instructions to your TTU email address. You will have a specific window of time to take action in registering for your
offered seat, so it is essential that you check your TTU email daily.
Do not contact instructors of courses for overrides. Raiderlink will track enrollments and notify waitlisted students of available seats in
a fair and orderly manner. Advisors are not authorized to override the automated Raiderlink waitlist system even if a professor were
to approve you for their course.
Please let us know if questions arise. You are welcome to reach out to an individual Honors advisor or to us at
We look forward to serving you in your preparations for the Spring 2024 semester, and beyond!
~ Your Honors Advising Team

communications skills through the framework of a visual and performing arts discipline.
No one can teach you to be creative. No one needs to. We are each and every one of us creative by virtue of being human. But we
can learn to be better at creative work by understanding the creative process. Through readings, group and individual projects, and
seminar discussion, you will develop a vision of the creative process, learn to identify blocks to that process, and acquire techniques
for getting you unblocked. This course is not just about art but about creative thinking and habits that are applicable to all human
endeavors.

This class assumes that this basic tenet of feminism is true: people who identify or are identified as women are oppressed. Over the
course of this semester, we will ask philosophical questions within feminism. What is feminism? What is sexism? Does sexism affect
our sexual ethics? What does the oppression of women look like and how is it perpetuated? How do other aspects of one’s social and
political identities change gendered oppression? A key theme throughout the course will be how to make feminism responsive to the
diversity of women and the differing forms of subordination each faces. In pursuing that goal, we will read and listen to a number of
women, including Sandra Bartky, Marilyn Frye, Kimberl Crenshaw, and Audre Lorde.

This is more than an introduction to the short story genre. It’s a study of the incredible emotional and creative range of the short story,
including its proven ability to generate empathy and generate effects in readers. From short shorts/flash fiction (1000 words or less) to
short story collections in which stories “talk” to each other novelistically, we’ll consider the protean and ever-expanding range of the
form. Our primary reading will be in three masters Flannery O’Connor, James Joyce, and Ernest Hemingway to show how contrasting
styles can produce equally brilliant results
Note that this class might could also be called “Reading Short Stories.” We’ll learn the art of reading like a writer and come to understand
the conventions that make the short story “work.” We’ll marvel at the ability of short stories to surprise, delight, paint pictures, draw
tears, and spur memories using twenty-six letters on a handful of pages. And, in a culminating exercise of critical and creative writing
activities, we will begin to practice “surprise and delight” on our own readers, and ourselves.

Music is, and always has been, pervasive in human culture. Moreover, there are few individuals who lack a strong connection to
something musical, be it a favorite band, a meaningful song, or a melody that we hope to never hear again. This course will introduce
students to the social, physiological, and psychological reasons behind these connections, shuttling back and forth between the
universal and personal manifestations of music and our minds.

Prerequisite: Completion of HONS 3300-H01
An Honors thesis is a long formal research paper or written creative work that conforms to the journal publishing standards in a
chosen field. The Honors thesis program consists of two semester-long research and writing courses, HONS 3300, followed by HONS
4300. Students do not meet in a classroom, but instead work independently, and in concert with a student-selected thesis director,
and the HONS 3300/4300 instructor. The thesis director must be a Texas Tech University faculty member. With guidance, students
work through a series of steps from the development of an argument to a completed thesis. In these two courses, students master
the following skills: note-taking, effective outlining, integrating primary and secondary sources, document formatting, utilizing
constructive feedback, argumentative and/or creative writing, and revising. This second semester of Honors thesis culminates with
Thesis Day, a celebration in which each student gives a brief presentation about their project (spring semester only). Students who
successfully complete an Honors thesis will graduate from the Honors College with the distinction of Highest Honors.

Since 2008, The Marvel Cinematic Universe Films are the template for the modern blockbuster. Marvel Studios created a shared
universe that includes feature films, network television, and several streaming series. The MCU films have generated over four billion
domestically showing just how iconic Marvel characters are. Avengers Endgame is one of the top grossing films of all time. Long
before Disney bought the company in 2009, Marvel had a long history dating back to the pulp publishing industry of the nineteen
thirties when their name was Timely Comics. In the early nineteen sixties, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and others created the
Marvel Universe that is so iconic today. This HONS Summit studies the history of Marvel, key artists and writers, Marvel films and
television (including Marvel Studios and the Cinematic Universe) and some of the important stories in the Marvel pantheon. As a class,
we will discuss why so many of Marvel’s 5,000 + characters have become part of our modern-day mythology. Marvel is one of the
longest running shared universes in history and this class celebrates that. This course is reading intensive and has mature content.

Dangerous ship crossings, unknown and hostile terrain, starvation, bad weather, bandits, and no communication with loved ones for
months or years. The nineteenth-century botanists, biologists, and ornithologists were the original Indiana Jones in their quest to
discover new plant and animal species. They were courageous and determined, just as were the illustrators traveling with them, who
produced some of the most important and often lovely scientific records of the day. In this Honors College seminar experience, we
will travel with them, too, as we learn by illustrating plants and birds ourselves, using many of their same techniques. We will paint
and draw and yes, go out into the field a time or two, but do not be afraid! You do not have to have prior skill or experience in either

Did you know that some of the most dangerous exploration in the history was in search of plants? Nineteenth century plant hunters

familiar plants as we practice the art of botanical illustration. This course is for artists and non-artists alike and is excellent training for

This course is different from the FYE class in that it places more focus on learning about processes associated with craft and creativity,
whereas the FYE course has more of a focus on the biography of Taylor Swift and ideas about identity and feminism.
Both examine her discography, but for the upper-level class I'd like to spend more time in deeper analysis of poetic devices and
identifying elements of music theory and structure in her work.
The final projects in the two courses are different as well- the FYE course requires students to write an album review for the midterm
and create a work of art based o n an era of their life (emphasizing the identity aspect of the course). The Songbook course
requires students to create their own collection of poems, stories, or songs applying what we've learned about the craft of these arts.

The horror genre is consistently one of the most widespread types of storytelling whether in film, literature, sequential art, television,
or videogames. Long-ignored writers like H.P. Lovecraft are now in the Library of America series and there is renewed interest in the
works of Arthur Machen, Clark Ashton Smith, and Robert W. Chambers. Stephen King is one of the most successful and widely read
writers in history. Horror films still make money year after year and television shows like American Horror Story are among the most
popular. With so much real horror in the world, why do we still love the horror genre? This course takes a multidisciplinary approach
to studying horror. It includes examining early cosmic literary horror, novel to film adaptation, horror related music, and how horror is
used in sequential art. In addition, we will study the history of forensic science in true crime and try to understand how certain cases
were solved or remain unsolved. We will also look at the history of medicine and certain historically associated horrors. This course
tries to answer the questions: What purpose does horror serve in our lives and why do we like being scared? Students will have the
opportunity to make their own horror film as their final project. This course has mature content. Please note this course is reading
intensive.

This course seeks to chart the historical and political development of the Arab Israeli conflict by analyzing key events and
controversies which have shaped the struggle. The course takes an in depth look at the peoples involved, the changing situations on
the ground and the ramifications the conflict has for the world beyond the regional borders. The course divides the conflict into four
main stages. The first is a proto-nationalist stage that examines the Zionist and Arab nationalist movements as they grew from
ideologies to full-fledged political entities from the 1880s to 1917. The second stage 1917-1948, from the Balfour declaration to the
creation of the state of Israel, sees two nationalist movements competing for the same land. The third stage, from 1948-1987, can be
understood as a state against state conflict which sees the state of Israel engaged in a conflict with other nations. The fourth stage,
identified as Israel against political Islam, shows the conflict being waged not only between Israel and other nation states, but against
armed Islamic political movements such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and Islamic Jihad. Time is also dedicated to broader ethical issues of
academic and community representations of the Arab Israeli conflict, and the nature of scholarly and community authority.

Introduction to personal finance, including goal setting, cash management, credit, insurance, taxes, housing, investment alternatives,
and retirement plans. To better understand how individuals and families make financial decisions to meet their goals, reading
assignments and discussion will focus on topics that are both relevant and timely. Class time will be spent collaboratively learning
about the financial marketplace and behavioral tendencies, which form the environment in which people make financial decisions.
Current issues such as financial literacy, time preferences, investment in human capital, behavioral finance, and generational
differences will be explored. Discussion will arise from the readings assigned that focus on current issues, often found in popular press
such as the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Kiplinger’s Magazine. It will also come from interesting and sometimes controversial
new research related to how and why people think about money as they do. We all know that our financial decisions are not always
rational, as assumed in economic theory. However, behavior research from economic, psychological, and socio-cultural perspectives
can inform us regarding financial decision making.

HE+ courses are a relatively new way to earn Honors credit! In HE+ courses, you’ll
experience an honors enrichment activity with your faculty member and other
Honors students, in regular TTU courses. Get ready for many more Honors
opportunities to earn Honors credit in every major even at the upper division!
If an Honors students enrolls in a designated HE+ section and successfully
completes it (earning a grade of B- or better in the class) and successfully completes
the non-graded Honors enrichment activity, that student will earn the number of
general Honors credits associated with the credit assigned to the course. For
example: with HIST 2301-001, the Honors student would earn 3 hours of Honors
credit.
PLEASE NOTE that HE+ sections, regardless of level, only fulfill general Honors
course requirements (and do not fulfill the 3000-level and 4000-level seminar
requirements).
With designated HE+ sections, there will be a HONS 0001 stand-alone no-credit
course associated with it. The student would enroll in the HONS 0001 section
associated with the HE+ lecture section in order to be a part of the HE+ initiative.
*** The HONS 0001 sections will be built and loaded in Raiderlink soon. As well, HE+
sections currently built are noted in this booklet in the pages following this one. We
expect more HE+ sections to be added in the coming days be sure to access
updated versions of this booklet for newly added courses. ***
The Honors College will contact all Honors students enrolled in each of the HE+
lecture sections with instructions about adding the HONS 0001 no-credit course to
your schedule.
